The Way We Were is a vintage shopping destination in historic Saint Augustine. Established in 1984, it has been a favorite amongst the true vintage lovers who travel far and wide searching for quality vintage.
In the summer of 2012, we stumbled upon this vintage shop while meandering the back streets and small shops in the historic district. The shop was closed, but we were drawn in by the window which was filled to the brim with sparkly rhinestone jewelry, fantastic vintage hats, furs, odd figurines and collectibles, beaded purses, etc. There was a small handwritten sign in the window that read “Shop for sale by owner”. We immediately called the number and within 5 days we became owners of a vintage boutique.
I was working full time in corporate training at the time, and my husband had just retired after 21 years in the Navy. We cleaned and refreshed the interior of the shop and hired Hannah, a Flagler student at the time, to work at the shop for us so I could continue working, while my husband began working in estate sales. I learned more and more about identifying vintage clothing, fabrics, researching labels and dating items. But mostly, I purchased more vintage inventory - a lot of it.
In October 2015, Saint Augustine was hit by Hurricane Matthew, which devastated many of the homes and businesses in the area. Our shop impacted by flood waters from the hurricane, and we were forced to vacate the building so it could undergo repairs. We decided to try online sales so I could continue working full time in my career, and my husband purchased a small jewelry shop in downtown, which meant he wouldn’t be able to spend time on the vintage shop. I decided to quit my job in 2017 so that I could open the shop again. In February 2018, after being closed for 15 months, the shop opened the doors of our new location at 74 San Marco Avenue in Saint Augustine’s Uptown shopping district.
The showroom is triple the size of the original space, housing over 1,200 sq. ft. of curated fabulous vintage clothing and accessories for men and women. We have another 1,500 sq. ft. of inventory in our offsite warehouse (i.e. addition on our home just to house the inventory - and it’s overflowing!)
The shop has evolved and transformed, and I am excited to be focusing all of my time on managing and growing the shop and the services. I was lucky enough to get Hannah to come back and work at the shop with me, and we are having the best time together reacquainting ourselves with our longtime customers while making new friends and meeting new customers.
Currently we offer shopping by appointment, but we are also open to the public when we don’t have appointments scheduled. We have developed relationships with professional stylists, makeup artists, photographers, and we can work with you to help you curate and build a wardrobe that fits your style and aesthetic. We offer styling and wardrobe services for TV, Print and Film. We also have a vintage bridal and formal collection, as well as historical and period reproductions for costuming and rentals. The shop space is also a studio and creative space, hosting fund raisers, private functions, and intimate weddings (yes, we do that). Contact the shop at (904) 825-0114 to find out more information or to schedule a private shopping appointment.
